Joy Liu is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFC 53681) who enjoys working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. Joy received her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Western Seminary in Los Gatos in December, 2008. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in drama from Stanford University. Joy also is trained in EMDR and has been pursuing additional training from the Therapeutic Spiral Institute for the use of psychodrama in the treatment of trauma.
With years of experience as a former teacher, youth drama director, and behavioral coach, Joy is passionate about helping children, youth, parents, and families understand themselves, enjoy each other, and succeed in their goals for health and growth. In recent years, Joy’s work has focused on helping children and youth with severe behavioral issues achieve more successes at home and at school. Joy has worked with children struggling with aggression, property destruction, defiance, self-injury, and many other behaviors.
Joy has a quiet, nurturing presence and uses a strength-based approach in psychotherapy. Her work with clients includes influences from art therapy, drama therapy, attachment theory, and motivational interviewing, with a foundation in behavioral therapy. Joy comes from a Chinese American background and Christian faith. She enjoys working with clients from all kinds of cultural backgrounds, faith traditions, and life journeys. Joy speaks English as well as conversational Mandarin and Cantonese.
